Hotel do Chiado
In the heart of Lisbon
About the hotel
Make yourself at home in a building that has stood the test of time
Of all the buildings that are part of Chiado, none captures the beat of this city quite as well as the one that houses us today. Hotel do Chiado is a mirror of Lisbon’s successive transformations: from the prayers of an ancient convent to the radiance of palatial halls, we have survived earthquakes and fires to remain a reflection of Lisbon’s soul.
Origins:
Existence of a chapel and a hospital on the site.
1279Oratorian Era
Donation to the Congregation of Saint Philip Neri; residence of figures such as Father Manuel Bernardes.
1571The Renaissance:
Destruction by the Great Earthquake and reconstruction in late Baroque and Pombaline style by José Joaquim Ludovice.
1755Luxury and Light:
The building houses Lisbon's most famous hotels (Universal, Europa, Gibraltar), serving as the stage for Chiado's first electric lighting experience in 1878.
19th CenturyArmazéns do Chiado:
Inauguration of the Companhia dos Grandes Armazéns do Chiado, becoming the symbol of elegant commerce that pulsed alongside the great European capitals.
1894The Trial by Fire:
The great Chiado fire destroys the interior of the building.
1988The Reconstruction
After the great fire of 1988, Chiado recovered its soul at the hands of the prestigious architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who designed a masterful reconstruction plan for the entire Chiado neighborhood. The result is a rare balance between historic charm and contemporary comfort, shaped by the culture, commerce, and architectural heritage of the neighborhood.
Architecture is not just function, it is a process of liberation.”

It was wonderful. They gave us an upgrade and the service was 5 stars. Extremely friendly, professional and attentive team. Very comfortable room and wonderful breakfast. The hotel has a beautiful view and a fantastic location! We also had a lovely dinner.
Located in the heart of the vibrant Chiado neighbourhood, this hotel is extremely welcoming. There are several rooms with terraces overlooking the city and the Tagus River. The reception was warm, the room spacious and clean, the breakfast generous. We will be more than happy to return on our next visit to Lisbon!
We had the opportunity to stay 3 nights at Hotel Do Chiado.
A splendid hotel, with a warm and friendly welcome. Extremely kind staff (reception, housekeeping, dining) and always at our disposal. Exemplary cleanliness and a very comfortable room.
Thank you for the kind attention (complimentary bottle of sparkling wine) on my wife's birthday.
Without a doubt, we will stay at your establishment again during our next visit and will not fail to tell our loved ones about your hotel.
What a great discovery!
What a great hotel. Perfect location for sightseeing, most places were within a short walking distance. Our room had French windows overlooking the street, which was very pleasant. One of the best things about this hotel was the rooftop terrace, with incredible views of Lisbon and the river. All the staff were lovely, from the restaurant to the reception, especially Alberto and Joelba at the front desk, who suggested places to visit and great restaurants to try. We plan to return.
